Default What am I looking at?

Well.... at least the majority of weeds they have are limited to crabgrass, nutsedge, clover, and prostrate spurge. :-)

Crap!!!!!!!!!!!!..... I need to email some pics to a mod in order to post them (my computator is messed up), and won't allow me to upload.

I need help identifying the main problem. They've got many brown dead spots in their front yard. I've not dealt with this before. I've got some nice pics, that I think some of you will recognize off the bat.

The soil, at least when I was there, was moist- they've been watering regularly. They do have two dogs (a wiener dog and a big puppy), but it doesn't look to me like they are pet spots, unless those dogs drink roundup or something.

I'm assuming brown patch, but how to confirm, conclusively?

.... and I forgot to mention- they have been watering at night.

Trying to decide which direction to go on this project. They are willing to have me re-sod, which might be the best option, considering what a mess it is, and how much repair work there would be (which would probably never look quite right). But I wanna make sure the new sod isn't gonna spot.

I want to correct you. They are not all weeds but they are all pest. 1 is a grass, 1 is a sedge, and 2 are weed. You will not get good crabgrass kill this time of year with as big as some of it is getting unless you do multiple applications of Drive. It is to late to treat nutsedge and not the right time to treat clover. You can kill the spurge very easily. You do have you pesticed license right, otherwise you cant treat any of it.

Pictures would be great to help you determine the fungus, if that is what it is. Pictures of actual grass blade would be best to get proper identification.

Resodding is ridiculous unless there is no grass there already and its just weed. You will still have your pest after the new sod gets establishes and you will be right back where you are now in a few years.

Nutsedge is a bitch to get rid of so good luck with that.

Yes- I was generalizing too much

It is to late to treat nutsedge (didn't know that)

and not the right time to treat clover. (That I knew. and I HATE that crap!!!)

You can kill the spurge very easily. I've never battled it, but I've been reading that it's actually kind of tough to eradicate- although an annual, like dandelions, they drop thousands of seeds for future fun. Unless I misunderstood.

You do have you pesticed license right, otherwise you cant treat any of it. That's correct.

Pictures would be great to help you determine the fungus, if that is what it is. Pretty sure it is. The "dog" issue is really the only thing that makes me doubt myself on that, but, even so.... I haven't seen pet spotting like this, if that's what it is. I emailed some pics to Nick- hoping he can post for me.

Pictures of actual grass blade would be best to get proper identification. Crap- that I don't have at present.

Resodding is ridiculous unless there is no grass there already and its just weed. It's approx 1400 square feet. I would say they only have maybe 25%% that isn't brown or full of weeds, pest, or other grass. :-)

You will still have your pest after the new sod gets establishes and you will be right back where you are now in a few years. Yeah.... that kinda sucks, but there are some practices they can change to help (even without chemical). Probably, though, the issue needs to be corrected first with a pesticide.

Nutsedge is a bitch to get rid of so good luck with that. Never battled that, either- but thanks for the "good luck"!! :-)
    Thanks Rob.

I have been very successful taking out nutsedge with Certainty herbicide. I have been using it quiet often lately on athletic fields.

I'm not sure whats going on in those pictures Jeff. I do see some goosegrass, which I use metribuzin to kill. Goosegrass is common in high traffic, highly compacted areas.

My first thought is that someone went crazy with some Roundup.....

She did say she sprayed some weeds in the somewhat recent past (it would appear that she missed most of em). I asked what she used. She said it "was like ya know one of those weed be gone sprays." I asked if she was certain it wasn't roundup. She said, "No. And I used the same spray in the back yard with no problem." I dunno... for now, I can just go on what she says.

I did pull on the grass in a dead spot to see if it was holding. I guess I could have checked more spots.

I did not feed her a line of BS on this. I said I would have to do some checking and get back to her. I, for one, am not afraid to admit when I don't know something.

    So I'll keep digging.
