Default How to cut steel edging?

Hey Nick, I know you use this stuff quite a bit...what's the best way to cut it?

    Anyone else use it?

I've got to put some in tomorrow, and need a good, quick, efficient way to cut this stuff.

    Thanks...

I use a cutting torch. I use it to bend it and cut it. I don't know of another way. Sawzall will probably work for cutting, but I often need to bend it, and heating is the only way.

Now, the thin stuff you get from Lowe's or Home Depot can be bent or cut much easier.

I've used a sawzall when power was available. I've also used a hacksaw and it went well but you need a vice mounted on the truck or trailer to hold it while you cut.

All the edging I've installed has been from Lowe's...

angle grinder, cut about 3/4" of the way through, then bend it at the cut back and forth a couple of times and the piece will snap off....and use the same to remove any sharp edges after cutting.

We were using it for gravel driveways & walks. So, the majority of it is below ground, and flush with the sod.

Byl, it looks like you are using some thick stuff.

I suggest one of these. http://www.harborfreight.com/portabl...nks-65818.html

I use it for cutting and bending, especially for the 90* bends. It works great.

Well, I don't have that exact model, I have the big bottles that I have to tote around on a cart. But I will get one like that soon......

The sawzall really worked well, I don't think I'd use anything else. As for the corners, they make corner pieces, so no cutting, heating, or bending is needed. You might want to check them out. Save on a lot of hard work.

How do the corner pieces attach? I would think one piece (heated and bent) would make for a cleaner appearance. ???? And one less piece that you have to buy. ??

They attach with stakes, just like the pieces attach to each other. Once they're in, it looks seemless.

do you have a web site, or some better pictures of this stuff?

    It sounds interesting.

I get mine at a iron works place. It comes in 20' sections, and cost me about $1.50 per foot, including the stakes.

Hey Nick, sorry I overlooked this. I get mine from JDL. I'm not sure on the price...I haven't bought the stuff in a while...and my foreman picked it up from JDL, and as usual he hasn't turned it the receipt yet!

What I use is 16' sections, about 4" wide and (I believe) 1/8" thick.

I'll see if I can get more info on it.

JDL just started carrying Aluminum edging last year...I haven't tried it yet, but I'd like to sometime soon.
