Yesterday was a beautiful day....went to the early service at church, rode my bike for 20 miles, then practiced softball for the first time this spring. Temps around 60°f. Headed home, gonna do some quick chores inside, then head out with the honey to eat dinner.....not so soon.......
He came in and said both dogs had eaten rat poison. I had set some out on the deck as we have been having issue with field mice for the last couple of weeks. Three were caught in trap, but I wanted to discourage them from even coming near...so put a handful of pellets near the entry point of the house. A door that is never used, but evidently, the mice like to wiggle in through it!
At any rate, I shouldn't have put the poison in reach of the pups, but hindsight is 20-20.
Got a hold of a vet on call, his suggestion was to induce vomiting, which could be done by either mustard or 15cc of hydrogen peroxide every 5 to 10 minutes. One of the pups let it go within about 5 to 6 applications....good deal. The second dog a bit more stubborn never would vomit. We tried the peroxide and then mustard...nothing. He heaved a couple of times, but would not let it go. He went to the vet this morning, appears to be okay, is on a week long dose of Vitamin K.
Just a word of caution about putting out poison....you may or may not hit your intended target....

Keepin' It Green
Oh wow. I am ultra aware of what I use around my home that might hurt my dog or other animals and do not use any poisons at all. No chemicals either, besides wasp spray if I really need to. What were ya thinking? I bet that was scary, and I am so glad they are ok. The field mice are hungry. Feed them bird seed lol. the poor things... poisoning the little woodland creatures. You meanie!!
Right, She.. the wonderful little woodland creatures are cute. UNTIL THEY"RE CHEWING ON YOUR HOUSE!!!!!!!!! SHREDDING YOUR WIRING!!!!! SOAKING YOUR INSULATION WITH PEE!!!!!!!!!!!!! BITING YOUR FACE WHILE YOU SLEEP!!!!!!!!!!! (okay, I exaggerate on the last one a little... but it could happen). :-)
My encounter was not my place- it was a farm, where I was a hired-hand. SHAME ON YOU, LAWNCHICK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ;-)
